Canaries Sign Jeff Malm, Place Motl On Disabled List
The Sioux Falls Canaries welcomed a new face to their roster on Sunday, signing two-way player Jeff Malm.
Malm, who is a left-handed pitcher as well as an outfielder and first baseman, started in left field for the Birds on Sunday in his debut with the team.
Malm was a top prospect out of high school at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. He moved through the Rays' farm system as a first baseman before moving to the mound in 2015.
Malm made his American Association debut in 2017 with the St. Paul Saints. He made 19 appearances (seven starts) with St. Paul in 2017 and 2018 with a 5.43 ERA.
Canaries outfielder Dan Motl was placed on the disabled list to make room for Malm on the roster. Motl injured his shoulder sliding into second on July 19. He is still being evaluated.
The Canaries had more news on the injury front this weekend. Starting shortstop Blake Schmit has been placed in the concussion protocol after a home-plate collision on July 20. Per the procedure, Schmit will have to wait five days after symptoms subside to return to the field.
Canaries outfielder Mike Hart is also dealing with an injury, working back from a bout with plantar fasciitis in his foot. Hart played hurt during Saturday's game with Chicago before being replaced in the lineup by Malm the next day. He is expected to rejoin the Canaries' lineup at full strength sometime this week.
The Canaries return home to the Birdcage on Friday for their Christmas In July game at 7 p.m. Any fan who makes a monetary or non-perishable food item donation to the Salvation Army at the game will be entered into a drawing for a new grill thanks to the Salvation Army. Plus, the Birds will wear special Christmas-themed uniforms which will be raffled off during the game. And of course, there's an All-Star Fireworks show after the game presented by Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital. Birds fans can get their tickets at the Sioux Falls Stadium box office of by calling 336-6060.
