Canaries Sign Louis Mele, Place Patrick Fiala on the Disabled List
Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries have signed former NYIT infielder Louis Mele and placed infielder Patrick Fiala on the disabled list, retroactive to June 20.
Mele finished his four-year career at the New York Institute of Technology with a .301 average, 17 homers and 98 RBIs in 568 at-bats. He led the team as a senior with a .341 batting average and a .422 on-base percentage with two homers and 15 RBIs in 135 at-bats.
Mele reached base safely in 15 straight games until departing the final game of his career in early to get a salute from the crowd. He was selected as the NYIT athletics co-senior male athlete of year.
In 29 games prior to going on the disabled list, Fiala hit .273/.339/.418 with six doubles, two triples, two home runs and 13 RBI, making starts at second, third and short.
Fiala is expected to miss two to three weeks with a broken bone in his foot.
