Canaries Sign Middle Infielder Darwin Perez

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Friday afternoon that they have signed former AAA infielder Darwin Perez to a contract and released utility player Taylor Zeutenhorst.

Perez was originally signed as 17 year old un-drafted free agent in 2006 by the Los Angeles Angels. He spent six seasons in the Angels organization, playing at every level of their minor league system, including a 13 game stint with the AAA Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League. Perez spent four seasons at the AA level, posting a .234 batting average while collecting 294 hits.

Perez joined the independent ranks in 2016, appearing in 38 games with the Atlantic League’s Somerset Patriots and York Revolution. The middle infielder pieced together 20 hits, with 10 RBI and 12 stolen bases while scoring 14 runs between the two teams.

The 26 year old Perez is in the middle of his 9th professional season, holding a .250 batting average to go along with his 178 extra-base hits, 322 RBI, and 123 career stolen bases.

Zeutenhorst appeared in 16 games for the Canaries in 2016, hitting .246 with two homeruns and six RBI. He holds a .279 batting average with 27 Extra-base hits and 41 RBI in 3 professional seasons.

Perez will be in uniform tonight for the series finale against the defending American Association Champion, Laredo Lemurs.
