Canaries sign RHP Neal Kunik, Place Ty Morrison on Inactive List

Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries have signed former Minnesota Golden Gophers’ RHP Neal Kunik and placed OF Ty Morrison on the inactive list.
Kunik, a 2015 graduate of the University of Minnesota, played three seasons for the Golden Gophers, going 2-3 with a 3.54 ERA in 48.1 innings pitched, striking out 25 and walking 14.
Kunick made two starts during his senior year at Minnesota in 2015 before suffering an arm injury and undergoing Tommy John surgery.
In 2016, Kunik played in the United Shore Professional Baseball League, posting a 0-3 record and a 6.60 ERA. In 15.0 innings pitched the Eagan, Minnesota native struck out 11, walked five and allowed 22 hits for the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers.
Ty Morrison hit .289/.370/.450 with the Canaries in 80 games played, with 18 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs and 47 RBI. Morrison totaled 90 hits in 311 at-bats for the Birds, along with 21 stolen bases before being placed on the inactive list so he can return to school to finish his education.
Morrison’s 21-game hit streak, spanning from July 8 to July 31, is still the longest hitting streak of the season in the American Association. During the streak, Morrison totaled 31 hits including 10 multi-hit games. During the stretch, Morrison was named the Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week of July 23, 2017.
The Canaries continue their four-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. LHP Joe Bircher (4-6, 4.93 ERA) will take the hill for the Canaries in game three of the series against RedHawks’ LHP Tyler Alexander (6-6, 2.36 ERA).
