Canaries Snag Pimentel In Trade With Saltdogs
With the 2018 Sioux Falls Canaries season fast approaching, the Birds have made a trade to shore up their pitching staff.
The team announced Wednesday they had acquired left-hander Cesilio Pimentel from the Lincoln SaltDogs in exchange for utility player Michael Hart.
Pimentel, a 25-year-old originally from the Dominican Republic, spent part of the 2017 season in the American Association, suiting up for the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks as well as the SaltDogs.
Canaries manager Mike Meyer said the lefty's versatility was one of the biggest reasons the Birds decided to acquire him.
"We're always looking for left-handed bullpen guys, but he has the ability to be a lockdown rotation guy as well," Meyer said. "He's going to add significant value to our staff."
Meyer said Pimentel will start the 2018 season in the bullpen, but could become a starter as the year progresses.
In 17 American Association appearances (10 of them starts) Pimentel finished with a 6-3 record and a 3.57 ERA. He struck out 60 batters in 68 innings of work.
Pimentel was sold to the Arizona Diamondbacks in August of 2017, making 5 appearances for the team's Pioneer League affiliate. It was the fifth season of minor league baseball for Pimentel, who started his career in the Pirates' organization.
Hart, whom the Birds signed this offseason, had a strong spring campaign for the Canaries.
"Mike immediately became one of our favorite guys here," Meyer said. "We're going to miss him. But we felt like we needed one more arm."
The Canaries open their 2017 season on Friday night at 7 p.m. with a Fireworks Night game against the Chicago Dogs. The opener is expected to draw a big crowd, but seats are still available at sfcanaries.com.
Fans who can't make the game can tune in on Sioux Falls Sports Radio - 1230-AM & 98.1-FM KWSN, or listen online at KWSN.com. The Birds will also have a video live stream of the game on americanassociationbaseball.tv.
