Canaries Solidify Left Side Of The Infield
Sioux Falls, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries are pleased to announce the signing of infielders Michael Wing and Jerome Peña for the 2015 season.
Power hitting infielder Michael Wing joins the Canaries in 2015 after posting a .284 batting average in 84 games last season for the Frontier League’s Gateway Grizzlies. The Pasadena, California native finished third on the team in batting average last season, and led the Grizzlies in home runs (14) and doubles (23).
Wing spent six seasons in the Los Angeles Angels organization from 2007-2012 appearing in 403 games. He hit .317 during the 2011 season for the Angels Class-A affiliate in San Bernardino, California, collecting 93 hits in 73 games, and finished fourth on the team in RBI with 54.
Middle infielder Jerome Peña enters his first season with the Canaries after spending the last four years in the Baltimore Orioles organization.
The Tempe, Arizona native appeared in 93 games last season for the Orioles Class-A affiliate in Frederick, MD, where he hit .269 with 19 doubles, four triples, and five home runs. The 26-year-old Peña enters the 2015 season with 290 career hits and a .253 batting average in 316 games played.
“Wing and Peña add a great deal of depth to the left side of our infield,” said first year manager Chris Paterson, “Both are proven players and should help us strengthen our offense and defense this season.”
The Canaries begin their 23rd season on May 21st-23rd in Sioux City, IA before opening their 2015 home schedule on Sunday, May 24th against the Explorers at 4:05 PM.
