Canaries Struggle to Find a Rhythm, Lose Game Two 4-1
By: Jerrett Mills
GARY, INDIANA— Quick at-bats and quick innings plagued Sioux Falls (21-27) offense on Saturday evening. Gary SouthShore (22-25) starting pitcher Charlie Rosario (8-3, 3.45 ERA) tossed four, 1-2-3 innings for the Railcats in route to a 4-1 victory at the U.S. Steel Yard.
The RailCats answered first with two runs in the bottom of the second. Michael Schroeder scored on a wild pitch from Jeremy Strawn, and Ryan Brockett hit an RBI single that scored Drew Martinez.
Sioux Falls stranded five runners on base, as they picked up no runs in game two. David Bergin paced the Canaries offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Rosario threw 7 2/3 innings on four hits and gave up no earned runs while striking out four Canaries batters. The RailCats ace has now thrown 15 2/3 innings of shutout baseball dating back to July 3 when he gave up just one earned run against Kansas City.
Birds’ starter Jeremy Strawn (2-6, 4.59 ERA) was unable to receive run support as he threw 7 1/3 innings on seven hits, while giving up two earned runs. The Canaries defense had two errors in the ballgame, proving to be costly. Vickash Ramjit misplaced a ball in the bottom of the second, allowing Drew Martinez to reach first base. The final error was recorded in the bottom of the sixth by RJ Perucki, allowing Jaime Del Valle to score.
Due to an injury to lefty Joe Bircher, the Birds’ will send Tyler Pearson to the mound of Sunday afternoon. Before being traded to Sioux Falls, Pearson pitched for the Laredo Lemurs. Pearson posted a 7-8 record with a 4.28 ERA. This year with the Birds’, Pearson is carrying a 1-1 record with a 5.55 ERA in 24 1/3 innings pitched.
