Canaries swap Pahuta for all-star first baseman
SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Canaries traded slugger Tim Pahuta on Tuesday to the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League in exchange for first baseman Christopher Duffy.
Duffy, 26, is a power-hitting first baseman who swatted 13 home runs last season for the Jackals, tie for fourth most in the Can-Am League. He batted .293 and knocked home 62 RBI, tied for third. Duffy was named the first baseman representative to the 2013 Can-Am League All-Star team.
The former Philadelphia Phillies prospect spent three seasons in the Phillies system prior to joining the independent ranks. The most notable was 2012, when he batted a combined .322 with 13 home runs and 71 RBI with Class A Lakewood and high Class A Clearwater. Duffy hails from Orlando, Fla., and played collegiately at the University of Central Florida.
Pahuta, 30, broke a Canaries team record in 2013 with 29 home runs. He hit .264 and collected 79 RBI in 95 games, his first independent season after seven years with the Washington Nationals.
The Canaries host the New Jersey Jackals for a three-game, interleague series August 12-14.
