SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Canaries entered the final game of their six-game homestand hoping to snap a six-game losing streak. The Birds stayed within striking distance for the first four innings, but a four-run fifth inning propelled the Laredo Lemurs to a 7-3 defeat of the Sioux Falls Canaries on Thursday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Canaries infielder RJ Perucki had a big night, going 3-for-4 with three singles, an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. The third-baseman made it a one run game in the bottom of the third, leading off the inning with a single and later scoring on a Chris Grayson RBI base hit.
Perucki struck again in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 3-2 ball game after driving in Jason Repko on a one-out RBI single. That would be the closest the Canaries would get to getting back in the ball game. Starting Pitcher Jeremy Strawn imploded in the top of the 5th inning, allowing four runs on four hits, including a Travis Denker two-run home run to give the Lemurs a 7-2 Lead.
Strawn (2-13, 5.45 ERA) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings. Relief pitcher Dennis Neal (0-1, 3.68 ERA) had a strong night out of the bullpen. The Lefty held the Lemurs offense scoreless over 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two batters. Josh Ferrell also tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Lemurs’ starter Matt Loosen (5-6, 3.83 ERA) picked up the win after allowing two runs on seven hits over 7 innings, while striking out seven batters in his second straight start.
The Birds’ hit the road for a three-game weekend series against the North Division Champion, Saint Paul Saints at CHS Field in downtown St. Paul, Mn. LHP Joe Bircher (3-4, 3.77 ERA) will get the start in the series opener against Saints RHP Robert Coe (8-3, 2.77 ERA).
