WINNIPEG, MANITOBA – The Sioux Falls Canaries (7-7) rode a strong pitching performance from RHP Shawn Blackwell on Wednesday afternoon, and a big day at the plate from outfielder Jason Repko to earn the team’s first series win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (5-8) since June 20th, 2001.

Repko helped the Birds’ jump out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, after driving a double into the gap in left-center, driving in both Edwin Gomez and Richard Stock.

The Canaries took a 4-1 lead into the top of the 6th inning before Gomez doubled down the left-field line, and later scored on a Repko RBI single into left.

The 34-year-old outfielder put together his best day in a Canaries uniform, going 2-for-4 at the plate, with a double, four RBI’s and two runs scored.

RHP Shawn Blackwell (1-2, 2.12 ERA) racked up a season high, six strikeouts, and earned his first win of the season, after allowing three runs on five hits over 6 innings.  Winnipeg’s Kyle Anderson (0-1, 4.70 ERA) suffered the loss.  Former Goldeyes reliever Chase Johnson earned his fourth save of the season for the Birds’.

The Canaries continue their week-long roadtrip on Friday night at 7:05 PM when they face the first place St. Paul Saints at the brand new CHS Field.  LHP Joe Bircher (1-0, 1.38 ERA) toes the rubber in his third start of the season for Sioux Falls.

The Birds’ return home on Monday, June 8th as they open up a seven-game home stand against the Grand Prairie AirHogs and St. Paul Saints.
