Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries dropped the series finale to the Lincoln Saltdogs in 10 innings at Sioux Falls Stadium, 6-3, in front of a crowd of 3,427.

Troy Marks and Brian McAfee cruised through the first five innings of play, combining to allow no runs on nine hits.

But the Saltdogs got on the board against Marks with an unearned run on an errant throw by catcher Mike Falsetti in the top of the sixth to take a 1-0 lead.

Lincoln added two more to their run total, both charged to Marks in the top of the eighth, stringing together two runs on three hits and walk against Marks and Andrew Woeck, who relieved Marks with a runner at first, two outs in the top of the seventh and the Birds’ trailing 2-0.

A walk and a RBI single from Tommy Mendonca made it a 3-0 lead for the Saltdogs, but the Birds’ bats would finally get going in the bottom of the frame.

Marks finished the night allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits, walking one over 7.2 innings pitched.

In the bottom of the eighth, Falsetti led off the inning against McAfee with a walk, and Dan Motl followed with a double, scoring Falsetti from first and putting the first run of the game on the board for the Birds. Motl went 4-for-5 with a double, run and a RBI.

After Jabari Henry flew out, Ty Morrison extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a RBI single, scoring Motl from second and cutting the Saltdogs’ lead to 3-2.

And after Woeck and Jose Ortega locked things down in the top of the ninth, working around an error and a walk, the Birds came up to bat in the bottom of the ninth, looking to tie things up or take the lead.

Burt Reynolds did just that, leading off the bottom of the ninth against Saltdogs’ closer Michael Wagner with a solo home run to tie the game at three.

A batter later Patrick Fiala reached second on an error and moved to third on a wild pitch, but he was left stranded at third, the game-winning run 90 feet from home.

Ortega came back out for the top of the tenth but struggled and allowed three runs on three hits, walking two batters and giving the Saltdogs a 6-3 lead.

And though Motl led off the bottom of the frame against Cameron McVey with a single, McVey worked a 1-2-3 inning with the help from a caught steal of Motl to hand the Birds their second straight loss.

Ortega takes the loss for the Birds, who fall to 30-34 on the season, while Wagner picks up the win, and McVey the save, for the Saltdogs, who move to an American Association-best 41-23.
