KANSAS CITY, KS — Joe Bircher threw seven shutout innings and Jake Taylor homered as the Sioux Falls Canaries topped the Kansas City T-Bones 4-2 on Friday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Bircher looked masterful yet again in his nineteenth start of the year. Bircher scattered six hits over his seven innings of work, not allowing a run and striking out eight in the process. He allowed only four runners to get into scoring position. Bircher gave up only one extra base hit, a fifth inning double to catcher and former Canary Nolan Johnson.
Bircher and Kansas City starter Jared Messer made quick work of the opposing offenses, putting up zeroes in the first three innings. Jake Taylor put the first dent in the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a two-out solo shot to give the Birds a 1-0 lead.
The Canaries tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Ethan Chapman walked to start the inning, then stole second. Jake Taylor reached on an infield single to the right side, allowing Chapman to move to third. J.C. Linares drove in Chapman with a RBI single, and Taylor came around to score on a Cameron Monger sacrifice fly to right to push the Birds in front 3-0.
Sioux Falls added an extra run in the eighth. Darwin Perez reached with a leadoff single, then scooted to second on a wild pitch. A Linares ground out allowed Perez to move to third, and Schmit brought him home courtesy of an error to make it a 4-0 game.
The T-Bones mounted a comeback attempt in the late innings, scoring a run in the eighth and a run in the ninth, but with the winning run at the plate, Madison Boer picked up the save with a strikeout to end the game.
The Canaries continue their final series of the season in Kansas City on Saturday night. Ray Hanson will take the mound for the Birds. Fans can listen to all of the action, all weekend long on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN.
