David Bergin Named League Player of the Week
Canaries slugger David Bergin has been named the American Association's Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending July 22, the league announced Monday.
Bergin was on fire for the Canaries over the past week, hitting .462/.588/.885 with three home runs and nine RBI. All of those numbers were team bests.
Bergin had a 16-game hitting streak snapped Friday, a string that had been the longest active hitting streak in the league. He hit .373 (25-for-67) during the streak with three home runs and 16 RBI.
Bergin had another remarkable streak this week, reaching base in ten straight plate appearances vs. the Winnipeg Goldeyes July 17-19, the longest such streak by a Canary this season.
Bergin's power has been on display recently for Sioux Falls as well, hitting three home runs in his last two games at Chicago Saturday and Sunday. Bergin is now tied for the Canaries' team lead with eight home runs this season.
This is Bergin's second career weekly honor from the American Association; he was named Player of the Week in June of 2015 during his first stint with Sioux Falls.
The Canaries return home to the Birdcage on Friday for their Christmas In July game at 7 p.m. Any fan who makes a monetary or non-perishable food item donation to the Salvation Army at the game will be entered into a drawing for a new grill thanks to the Salvation Army. Plus, the Birds will wear special Christmas-themed uniforms which will be raffled off during the game.
