SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Canaries squandered an early lead to Wichita and could not retake the lead. The Wingnuts swept the Canaries this weekend, taking the finale 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.

For the first time in their last seven games, the Canaries struck first. Jabari Henry singled home Blake Schmit to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Patrick Fiala added to the lead with a solo home run in the second, his fifth of the season.

John Nester gave Wichita a lead in the third, clearing the bases with a three-run double. Nester advanced to third base on a wild pitch but was left stranded keeping the score at 3-2 in favor of Wichita.

Sioux Falls tied the game up thanks to an errant throw by Wichita catcher Logan Trowbridge. Schmit attempted to steal third and the throw sailed into left field, allowing Schmit to score.

Wichita reclaimed the lead thanks to Nester’s fourth RBI of the day, this time a sacrifice fly scoring Nick Rotola. The Wingnuts tacked on a run in the eighth with a groundout to second base, extending their lead to 5-3.

Sioux Falls had a pair on in the eighth, but were unable to score, losing the final game of the series 5-3.
