SIOUX FALLS, SD – Patrick Fiala got a chance to play hometown hero on Tuesday night and roped a two-out bases-clearing double to the left field corner in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Sioux Falls Canaries over the Gary RailCats 4-1.
Starter Kris Regas pitched very well on Tuesday, tossing six shutout innings. He scattered seven hits over those six innings to go along with a walk and four strikeouts. Regas has now thrown 13 shutout innings on the season against the Cats.
Regas and Gary starter Charle Rosario were locked in to a pitcher’s duel much of the night, holding the opposing offenses quiet much of the night. However, the Canaries broke through first in the fifth inning. Mike Falsetti reached on an error, then advanced to second on an Aaron Owen sacrifice bunt. B.J. Guinn scored Falsetti from second with a single, aided by an error on the right fielder to put the Birds up 1-0.
The RailCats battled back in the eighth. Kris Goodman worked his way on with a one-out walk, then moved to second on a Frank Martinez groundout to first. Alex Crosby drove in Goodman with a sharp single to center, tying the game at one.
Guinn and Jake Taylor were retired quickly for the first two outs of the bottom of the eighth. However, J.C. Linares and Blake Schmit reached with back-to-back singles, then Cameron Monger walked to load the bases, setting up a near-perfect scenario for Fiala. The Sioux Falls Washington High School and Augustana University grad delivered, roping a bases-clearing double to the left field corner, pushing the Birds out to a 4-1 lead. Jose Ortega came out of the Canaries bullpen and earned the save to seal the game.
The Canaries and RailCats continue their three-game set on Wednesday night as lefty Dylan Thompson (4-1, 2.89 ERA) takes the hill for the Birds. The Canaries will play their final home game of the season on Thursday night before closing out the season on the road in Kansas City over Labor Day weekend.
