From Tryouts To The Birds: Canaries Sign Hollie
The Sioux Falls Canaries have signed infielder Sam Hollie to a contract, the club announced Sunday.
Hollie signs with the Canaries after impressing at the Birds' open tryouts in early May. A resident of Arlington, Texas, Hollie will bat ninth and serve as the Canaries' designated hitter for their game with Cleburne on Sunday night.
"When I got on the field for the tryout it just was second nature," Hollie said. "I'm very thankful and blessed to be here this early [in the season]."
In a corresponding move, the Canaries placed Trae Santos on the Disabled List with a knee injury.
Hollie was a four-year starter at the University of Texas - Arlington from 2015 to 2018. He hit .291/.368/.427 with four home runs and 29 RBIs his senior year with the Mavericks last year.
Most recently, Hollie suited up for the Bakersfield Blues of the Western League, a winter independent league based in California. Hollie played 8 games with the Blues, going 1-for-17 with a double.
Hollie has also found success on the collegiate summer wood bat circuit. He played for the Coastal Plain League's Savannah Bananas in 2016 and 2017. Hollie was named a CPL All-Star in 2017, hitting .304/.369/.467 with four home runs and 30 RBI in 47 games.
The Canaries' home opener is scheduled for May 31, a Fireworks Night game against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:05pm.
