Goldeyes Complete Sweep of Canaries with 8-3 Win
By Tony Cola
Former Sioux Falls Canary Reggie Abercrombie carried the broom and the Winnipeg Goldeye offense Thursday night as a big night helped his club to an 8-3 victory over his former team, completing the four-game sweep in Sioux Falls. The centerfielder went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs to power his club past the struggling Canaries (6-14), who ended their eight-game homestand with a six-game losing streak.
Winnipeg didn’t wait long to jump on the board, quickly loading the bases on starting pitcher Ben Moore with no outs. The Goldeyes jumped on the opportunity by taking a 2-0 lead on a sac fly followed by an RBI single from Abercombie. Canary shortstop Steve Tinoco chopped the lead in half the very next half-inning with a monster solo blast to the right field seats.
The Goldeyes responded to the dinger with four straight runs through six more innings on Moore, who allowed six runs and 12 hits in a rocky start for Sioux Falls. A two-run double by Ty Forney with one out in the bottom of the ninth tempted Canary fans with a slimmer of hope, but it was too little much too late for the home club as they dropped to 3-10 at the Birdcage this year.
Winnipeg’s offense gave Goldeye starting pitcher Nick Hernandez more run support than he’d need, as he would hold his own by striking out six batters through 6.2 innings while walking none. Five different Goldeye players drove in runs Thursday evening, while six different runners touched home plate for the club. It’s a stark contrast to the Canaries, who have managed to score six runs in their last four contests.
The Canaries will begin a six-game road trip tomorrow, starting with a visit to Gary-Southshore to open a three-game series at 7:05 PM. Fans will have to wait until Jun. 13 to see the Canaries back at the Birdcage, when they open a three-game set against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. It will be Movie Night at the Birdcage, followed by Fireworks presented by Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital, Orthopedic Institute & All-Star Fireworks.
