The road back from Tommy John surgery is never an easy one, but for Grady Wood, it went about as well as he could have hoped.
The Sioux Falls Canaries have re-signed Wood for the 2019 season, the club announced Sunday. Wood is fully healthy and is expected to start the season in the Birds' starting rotation.
Wood, who will turn 29 just before Opening Day, made just four starts with the Canaries last year while struggling with an elbow injury. He went under the knife in late June, ending his season.
Wood was a bona fide ace for the Canaries in 2017, leading Sioux Falls with a 2.71 ERA and 117 strikeouts. Those numbers ranked fourth and fifth in the American Association, respectively. He also led the Birds with a 1.00 WHIP and a 4.88 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
A 10th-round draft pick by the Seattle Mariners in 2012, Wood spent four seasons in the Mariners' minor league system before making the move to indy ball. He owns a career 3.62 ERA in minor league ball.
The Sioux Falls Canaries open their 2019 season on May 16 on the road. Their home opener is scheduled for May 31, a Fireworks Night game against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:05pm.
