SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Canaries overcame a four-run deficit to take down Gary SouthShore on Saturday night.  The win clinches the Canaries’ fifth series win of the season.

Gary SouthShore struck early, knocking in four runs in their half of the third. The inning booted Sioux Falls starter Dylan Thompson from the game after three innings. Newcomer John Straka came in, pitching four fine innings in relief.

The Canaries had work to do, and the offense responded. In the fourth, Chris Grayson’s seventh home run of the season got the offense on the board. Jordan Smith brought home Jordan Dean with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and then Maxx Garrett hit a two-run bomb in the sixth to tie things back up at four.

With Straka on the mound, Gary SouthShore retook the lead in the seventh. Wilfredo Gimenez coming around to score off a failed pickoff attempt by Garrett.

Sioux Falls responded in the bottom of the inning, taking their first lead of the game on a David Bergin RBI single and a Chris Grayson RBI double. It was Grayson’s third extra-base hit of the night, giving the Birds a 6-5 lead.

The Canaries bought some insurance in the eighth. Motl singled home Patrick Fiala, extending Sioux Falls’ lead to 7-5. Kyle Schepel came in to earn his fourth save of the year, retiring the RailCats in order.

Chris Grayson had a career night, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and a home run, the most hits he has ever recorded in American Association play … the Canaries are now 4-3 when hitting multiple home runs in the game … the win is their fifth against teams above the .500 mark … Maxx Garrett has hit three home runs in his last four games, in which he is getting on base at a .688 clip … four Canaries had multiple hits, the eighth time this season four or more Sioux Falls batters have achieved the feat … the win was the Canaries’ fourth when trailing after five innings of play.
