SIOUX FALLS, SD— The Siouux Falls Canaries ( 30-48) opened up a three-game series against the Gary-Southshore RailCats on Friday night in front of 3,834 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium. Chris Grayson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eight, but the Canaries bullpen allowed three runs in the top of the ninth, with Birds’ falling by the final score of 6-2.

RailCats starting pitcher Charlie Rosario dominated the Birds’ bats over the first seven innings.  The right-hander scattered eight hits, but did not allow a run until the bottom of the eight.  Rosario gave up two runs on four hits in his final inning of work, but held on for the win.

Starting pitcher Jeremy Strawn (2-12, 5.16 ERA) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings of work.  The right-hander allowed just one run on three hits over his first five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth.  Strawn retired the first two batters of the innings with back-to-back ground outs, but gave up three straight hits, including an RBI double to Jose Sermo.

The Birds got their only runs of the night with Angel Chavez leading off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single, and later scoring on a Chris Grayson two-run home run (3) that sailed deep over the right-field wall.

The Canaries offense had plenty of chances to put runs on the board, but Rosario held them in check throughout the night, leaving eight runners on base. The biggest threat of the night came in the bottom of the fourth with Brian Humphries reaching base on a lead-off single and advancing to third on a Jason Repko double, but the offense stalled, with the next three batters going down in order.

Grayson finished the night 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and two singles.  Repko had a good night, going 2-for-4 with a single and a double.

RailCats catcher Jaime Del Valle had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.

LHP Joe Bircher (3-3, 3.71 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Birds on Saturday night with a 6:05 PM first pitch at Sioux Falls Stadium.
