SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-4) dropped their 4th straight loss, falling to the Sioux City Explorers (4-6) by the final score of 2-1 on Saturday night.

The Sioux Falls offense struggled on Saturday night, going a combined 3-for-31 at the plate against Sioux City pitching. The Birds’ lone run of the night came with one out in the top of the second inning, when infielder Ozney Guillen blasted an 0-1 pitch deep over the right field wall.  It was the first home run of the season for Guillen, who has now hit safely in three straight games for the Birds.

The Canaries had opportunities to get back into the game on several occasions. David Bergin led off the top of the fourth inning with a double off the wall in right, but was left stranded at third with the bases loaded after Cameron Garfield grounded into an inning ending fielders choice. The Birds’ put the tying run on again in the sixth inning after Jerome Pena’s one-out double, but again were unable to bring the run home.

Starting pitcher Joe Bircher got out to a shaky start, giving up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the 1st inning. X’s outfielder Derrick Robinson reached base on a lead-off single, and later stole third base before coming home to score the game’s first run on a Noah Perio Jr. RBI single.  Sioux City would add another run on a Nate Sampson RBI single, making it a 2-0 ball game.

Bircher (0-1, 2.76 ERA) did not allow another run the rest of the night, racking up eight strikeouts while allowing two runs on nine hits over seven strong innings.

Relief pitcher Jimmer Kennedy also put together a good outing for the Canaries, retiring the Explorers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th.

With the loss, the Canaries fall to 5-4 on the year, and have now lost four straight after winning their first five.

The three-game series in Sioux City wraps up on Sunday afternoon with RHP Stephen Bougher (1-0, 1.35 ERA making his second start of the season. The Explorers will send out RHP Ryan Zimmerman (0-2, 20.25 ERA) in the series finale. Fans can listen to the action live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
