Guillen's Homerun Not Enough In Canaries 2-1 Loss
SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-4) dropped their 4th straight loss, falling to the Sioux City Explorers (4-6) by the final score of 2-1 on Saturday night.
The Sioux Falls offense struggled on Saturday night, going a combined 3-for-31 at the plate against Sioux City pitching. The Birds’ lone run of the night came with one out in the top of the second inning, when infielder Ozney Guillen blasted an 0-1 pitch deep over the right field wall. The Birds’ put the tying run on again in the sixth inning after Jerome Pena’s one-out double, but again were unable to bring the run home.
Starting pitcher Joe Bircher got out to a shaky start, giving up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the 1st inning. X’s outfielder Derrick Robinson reached base on a lead-off single, and later stole third base before coming home to score the game’s first run on a Noah Perio Jr. RBI single. Sioux City would add another run on a Nate Sampson RBI single, making it a 2-0 ball game.
Bircher (0-1, 2.76 ERA) did not allow another run the rest of the night, racking up eight strikeouts while allowing two runs on nine hits over seven strong innings.
