Hart Joins Canaries Via Trade With SaltDogs
There’s a new face in the Sioux Falls Canaries’ dugout. Mike Hart, who spent the preseason with the Birds, returns to Sioux Falls via a trade with the Lincoln SaltDogs. Hart had originally been traded from Sioux Falls to Lincoln just before Opening Night.
Hart is a utility player who can play the outfield, corner infield positions, and catcher if needed. He originally signed with the Canaries out of the University of Massachusetts, where he served as co-captian for the Minutemen in 2017.
Hart took the field last winter for the Perth Heat of the Australian Baseball League, hitting .222/.378/.306 in 11 games. Hart was versatile in the field for the Heat, starting at catcher, left field and first base during his stint with the team.
"Mike immediately became one of our favorite guys here," Canaries manager Mike Meyer said of Hart's stint with the Birds in the preseason. "He plays the game hard, he’s scrappy, he’s tough, but he’s also extremely talented."
Meyer said Hart can play every position on the field except for pitcher and shortstop, but will primarily be used as an outfielder in the short term while left fielder Ty Morrison is day-to-day with a shoulder issue.
Hart and the Canaries play the last game of their season-opening homestand on Thursday night against their I-29 rivals, the Sioux City Explorers. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Birdcage. Fans can get their tickets at the Sioux Falls Stadium box office or by calling 336-6060.
