Late Winnipeg Rally Downs Birds In Series Finale

The Sioux Falls Canaries dropped the last game of their series in Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Goldeyes 6-3.

Aaron Gretz drove in another run in the second, scoring Tyler Wolfe with an RBI single of his own.
The Birds took 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third, until a bases-loaded walk from Grant Heyman off Canaries starter Jim Patterson cut the lead in half. That loaded the bases for Kevin Garcia, who lined out to right to end the inning.
Winnipeg would tie the game in the fourth after an RBI single from Victor Cruzado made the score 2-2.
Birds manager Mike Meyer pulled Patterson after four innings of work. Patterson struggled with his control in the outing, giving up two runs on six hits, walking four and striking out two.
The Birds retook the lead in the seventh on a solo home run from Burt Reynolds. The homer was his second of the season and fourth RBI.
The lead would be short-lived. Winnipeg plated two in the seventh on an RBI double from David Bergin and a sacrifice fly from Garcia.
Both runs scored off of Ryan Fritze, who gave up four runs over the seventh and eighth innings to take the loss for the Birds.
Winnipeg's last two runs scored in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from Matt McCann and a fielder's choice ground ball off the batt of Reynaldo Rodriguez.
Winnipeg starter Shane Dawson through seven strong innings for the Goldeyes, giving up three runs on eight hits, walking none and striking out five. He moved to 2-0 on the year with the win.
The Birds head to Fargo next to take on the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Monday night at 6 p.m.
