Linares' Big Bat Powers Birds' To 18-9 Win Over Winnipeg

SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries put together their biggest offensive night of the season, defeating their North Division rivals, the Winnipeg Goldeyes by the final score of 18-9 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,556 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night.

Canaries starting pitcher Shawn Blackwell left the game in the first inning after taking a line drive off his head. Blackwell gave up four runs on three hits, including a Willie Cabrera three-run homer. Cabrera has five hits in his first two games with the Goldeyes this season.

Left-handed relief pitcher, Dylan Badura picked up his first win of the season, after allowing three runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings. Billy Waltrip also pitched in relief, holding the Goldeyes offense to one run on two hits while striking out a season-high five batters.

The Birds’ trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the 2nd inning before Darwin Perez and Jake Taylor hit back-to-back RBI singles to bring the Birds within two runs. David Bergin walked to load the bases for J.C. Linares, who hit a grand-slam into the party deck in right field to give his team a 6-4 lead.

The Canaries added five more runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to make it an 11-4 ball game, before Winnipeg’s second baseman Casio Grider hit a three-run homer to left-Center in the top of the 4th to make it a four-run ball game.

Linares struck again in the bottom of the 5th inning, sending his second blast of the night over the center field wall, a two-run homer, to make it a 13-7 lead.

The Canaries hit five long-balls in the win, with David Bergin, Ryan Lashley, and Jake Taylor joining in the hit parade. Linares had his best night in Canaries uniform, extending his eight-game hitting streak, going 3-for-4 with six RBI in the win.

The four-game series continues on Saturday night with Canaries LHP Misael Siverio (3-5, 6.49 ERA) making his 10th start of the season against Goldeyes RHP Duke Von Schamann (3-4, 4.08 ERA).
