Lincoln Rallies Late To Top Canaries 4-3

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries wrapped up their final weekend series of the 2016 season on Sunday evening with a 4-3 loss to the Lincoln Saltdogs in front of 2,722 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Canaries starting pitcher Joe Bircher (4-6, 2.54 ERA) had another good start on Sunday, but ultimately picked up a no-decision after allowing three runs on six hits over seven inning of work. The left-hander threw 134 pitches on the night, holding the Saltdogs to just one run over the first six innings, but ran out of gas in the top of the 7th, giving up two runs on one hit.

Bircher left the game in a 3-3 tie, with right-handed reliever Shawn Blackwell facing the Saltdogs in the top of the 8th inning. Blackwell (6-8, 7.18 ERA) suffered the loss after giving up a lead-off double to Austin Gallager, who scored the eventual winning run on an Austin Darby pinch-hit RBI sac-fly.

Lincoln starting pitch Shairon Martis also picked up a no-decision on Sunday evening after giving up three runs on eight hits over six innings of work. The veteran right-hander gave up back-to-back base hits in the bottom of the first inning, but left both runners on base. The Birds struck in the bottom of the 2nd inning with Blake Schmit leading off the inning with a double. The Canaries scored their first run of the inning on a BJ Guinn RBI single, and extended their lead to 3-0 two batters later on an Aaron Owen RBI triple.

Relief pitcher J.R. Bunda worked two shutout innings, striking out two batters on the way to his third win of the season for Lincoln. Closer Evan Reed picked up his 19th save of the season for Lincoln, leaving the potential game-tying run in scoring position to end the game.

Outfielder Aaron Owen finished the night going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a strikeout. Blake Schmit also finished the night with two hits, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

The Canaries have an off-day on Monday, but return to the Birdcage on Tuesday August 23rd to battle the Sioux City Explorers in a three-game series. RHP Ray Hanson will go for his first win of the season in the series open, with First pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM at the Birdcage.
