Paterson Announces 2015 Coaching Staff
Sioux Falls, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Monday morning that they have hired Roosevelt Brown as hitting coach, and Joe Winkelsas as pitching coach for the 2015 season.
A 1993 draft pick of the Atlanta Braves, Brown spent 10 seasons in the minor leagues with the Braves, Cubs, and Florida Marlins before reaching the big leagues in 1999. He won two triple-A Pacific Coast League batting titles while playing for the Iowa Cubs, and had the second highest batting average among all minor leaguers during the 1999 season.
Brown’s best all-around season came in 1999, hitting .321 in 141 games for the Cubs’ Double-A, Triple-A, and Major League squads. He had the second highest batting among all minor leaguers that season, posting a .358 batting average while collecting 22 HR’s and 79 RBI for Triple-A Iowa.
Brown played in four major league seasons for the Chicago Cubs from 1999-2002, collecting 111 hits while posting a .251 career batting average in 228 games played.
Brown joined the coaching ranks in 2009 as the hitting coach for the Braves Double-A affiliate, the Mississippi Braves, where he worked with eventual major league hitters, Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman, Nate McLouth, and Brandon Hicks.
Winkelsas signed as an amateur free agent with the Atlanta Braves in 1996, and spent 14 years in the minor leagues as a relief pitcher for the Braves, Chicago White Sox, and Milwaukee Brewers. He appeared in 311 minor league games from 1996 through 2010, recording 293 strikeouts and a 3.72 ERA.
The hard throwing right-hander spent most of the 1999 season at Double-A Greenville where he was the team’s top closer. In 55 games, Winkelsas posted a 3.75 ERA and struck out 38 batters while recording 12 saves.
The Buffalo, New York native had a brief stint in the major leagues with the Atlanta Braves in 1999. He would work his way back to the big leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2006, striking out four batters in seven innings.
The 2015 season will be the first as a pitching coach at the professional level for Winkelsas.
“These guys are two of the best out there today” said first year manager Chris Paterson, “Their experience and knowledge of the game will go a long way towards helping us bring a winning team back to Sioux Falls.”
