Winnipeg, MB—The Sioux Falls Canaries snapped their season-worst six-game losing streak on Thursday afternoon with a 6-4 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park. Jerome Pena paced the Canaries high-powered offense with a pair of home runs in the win.
Pena’s first blast of the afternoon came two pitches into the ball game, sending a lead-off homer deep over the left-field wall to give the Birds a 1-0 lead. His second shot of the night came in the top of the third, hooking another lead-off blast around the left-field foul pole.
Pena’s second blast got the Canaries back within one run at 3-2 before David Bergin and Brian Humphries went back-to-back with a pair of solo home runs to give the Birds’ their second, and final lead of the day.
Starting pitcher Stephen Bougher (4-4, 4.46 ERA) held the Goldeyes offense to just four runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Winnipeg’s starting pitcher Nic Hernandez suffered his sixth loss of the year, in his shortest outing of the summer. The left-hander allowed six runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings of work.
