Repko Homers, Extends Hitting Streak In Canaries 6-5 Win

LINCOLN, NE- The Sioux Falls Canaries hit the road for the final roadtrip of the season, playing eight games on the road over the next nine days. The Birds’ opened up a four-game series at Lincoln’s Haymarket Park on Thursday night, defeating the SaltDogs by the final score of 5-4.

Outfielder Jason Repko extended his hitting streak to eight games after tying the game at 2-2 with a solo home run (12) over the left field wall in the top of the 3rd inning. The 34-year old veteran finished the night 2-for-5, and knocked in the eventual winning run on a blooper to left in the 9th that was officially ruled an error. Repko has two doubles, four home runs, and eight RBI’s while posting a .444 batting average during his recent run of success.

David Bergin also had a good night offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, and two runs scored. The Canaries first-baseman picked up his 100th his of the season with a lead-off double in the 6th, and later scored to make it 3-3 on a Steve Solkoski RBI single. Solkoski ended his night 1-for-3 with two RBI’s.

Canaries starting pitcher Shawn Blackwell had another strong outing for the Birds, allowing four runs on seven hits over 7 2/3 innings. The reigning American Association Pitcher of the Week walked just one batter while recording nine strikeouts, but left the game with a 4-3 lead, but suffered the no-decision.

RHP Benny Suarez allowed the tying run to score after giving up a two-out RBI single to Lincoln’s Mitch Canham, but ultimately picked up his first win of the season after the Birds rallied back to take the 5-4 lead in the top of the 9th.

Closer Chase Johnson made it interesting, but picked up his 13th save of the season in a scoreless inning of work. The right-hander had to wait nearly 30 minutes to record his final after the game was delayed due to heavy rain with the bases loaded and two outs. Johnson recorded the final out of the night,

SaltDogs starting pitcher Jesse Smith also picked up a no-decision after allowing three runs on 11 hits over six innings. LHP Connor Spink was the first out of the bullpen, allowing one run on two hits over two innings, before Marshall Schuler allowed the eventual winning run, without allowing a hit in the 9th.

The Canaries continue their four-game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs on Friday night, with RHP Ray Hanson (1-0, 4.50 ERA) making his second start of the season for Sioux Falls.
