Saints Slug Their Way To 12-5 Win
SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries opened up a three-game series against the St. Paul Saints on Monday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Saints rolled out 12 runs on 16 hits to hand the Birds a 12-5 loss in the series opener, and their first home loss of season.
Canaries starting pitcher Troy Marks recorded five strikeouts in his Canaries debut, but suffered the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits over five innings of work.
Saints outfielder Breland Almadova finished the night going 5-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Tony Caldwell also had a big night for the Saints, going 2-for-4 with two homers while adding three RBI and three runs scored.
The Canaries were led offensively by Chris Jacobs, who finished the night going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. BJ Guinn JR also had a good night, going 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.
The Canaries continue their home stand on Tuesday night with RHP Miles Nordgren making his first start of the 2017 season against Saints right-hander, Mark Hamburger.
Nordgren was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 23rd round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Birmingham-Southern. He spent three seasons in the Twins' system, playing for Cedar Rapids, Elizabethton and Fort Meyers. In 32 starts, and 57 appearances in the minors, Nordgren went 7-17 with a 3.10 ERA.
