SIOUX CITY, IA — Blake Schmit’s RBI single in the top of the twelfth inning lifted the Sioux Falls Canaries over the Sioux City Explorers 3-2 on Saturday night at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.

Starter Stephen Bougher had an iron man performance on Saturday, throwing over 120 pitches in eight full innings of work, scattering nine hits over those innings, allowing only two runs to go along with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Birds struck first in the top of the first. Blake Schmit, who was moved down to the three-hole in the lineup, hit a two-out single then stole second base. He came around to score on a David Bergin single to put the Birds up early 1-0.

The Canaries added a second run in the fifth. Ethan Chapman led off the inning with a triple, then Rubi Silva picked up his first RBI in a Canaries uniform when he drove in Chapman with a single to double the Canaries lead at 2-0.

Bougher’s biggest blunder came in the fifth. Derrick Robinson led off with a single, then Michael Lang reached on a fielder’s choice. Nate Samson hit a one-out, two-run homer over the wall in left to tie up the ballgame at two.

The Canaries and X’s exchanged threats the remainder of the game, but neither team capitalized until the twelfth inning. Chapman led off with a single, then advanced to second on a Darwin Perez sacrifice bunt. Silva struck out for out number two. Schmit roped a two-out single to center, allowing Chapman to score from second to put the Birds ahead 3-2.

Josh Ferrell pitched 3.1 innings of shutout baseball in the ninth and into the extra frames to pick up the win, then Madison Boer came in to earn the final two outs and the save, shutting the door on the X’s as the Birds snapped their four game losing skid.

The Canaries play their final game on Sunday afternoon before the All-Star Break, with first pitch on Sunday scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Birds then return home for an eight-game homestand, as they welcome in the Explorers, Texas AirHogs, and Winnipeg Goldeyes over those eight games.
