Sioux City's 8th Inning Rally Spoils Wood's Solid Pitching Performance
SIOUX FALLS, SD – For a second consecutive night, the Sioux City Explorers used an 8th inning rally to defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries, this time by the final score of 8-2 at Mercy Field and Lewis & Clark Park.
Canaries starter Grady Wood looked strong in his second start of the season. The right-hander gave up one run on three hits in the bottom of the first inning, but found his groove in the middle innings. He retired the next 14 batters before giving up a one-out single to Jayce Ray in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Wood came out to work the 7th inning, but left with one out after a throwing error allowed two men to reach base safely. Dylan Thompson came out to record the final two outs of the inning, leaving the game in a 1-1 tie.
The Birds took their first lead of the night in the top of the 8th inning when Chris Jacobs ripped a two-out, RBI double down the right-field line, scoring Blake Schmit all the way from first base.
The wheels came off in the bottom of the 8th inning, with Sioux City scoring seven runs on four hits against reliever Josh Ferrell and Nicco Blank.
Josh Vitter’s three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning helped cap off the big come-back win for Sioux City, who have now won five straight, including the first two games of the weekend series against the Canaries.
Jacobs finished the night going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. The hard hitting infielder has now hit safely in 7 consecutive games, and leads the canaries with a .424 batting average entering Sunday night’s series finale in Sioux City.
Schmit wrapped up his night with a 2-for-4 effort and has now hit safely in 21 of his last 23 games with the Canaries, dating back to August 20th of last season.
Right-hander Troy Marks (0-1) will make his second start of the season against on Sunday night in the series finale. Marks suffered the loss in his first start of the season after allowed six runs on nine hits over five innings of work against the St. Paul Saints on May 22nd.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. in Sioux City on Sunday night. Fans can listen to all of the action starting at 5:45 p.m. on Sioux Falls Sports Radio, AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
