WINNIPEG, MB — Jake Taylor hit a mammoth three-run homer in the sixth to put the Canaries up for good in a 5-3 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Sunday afternoon.
The Canaries opened the scoring in the third. Ethan Chapman reached after being hit by a pitch, then advanced to third on a two-out single by Blake Schmit. Chapman scampered home on a wild pitch with Darwin Perez at the plate, putting the Birds up 1-0.
But on par with last night’s game, the Goldeyes battled back in the bottom of the third. Casio Grider reached on an error to lead off the inning and would come around to score on a Maikol Gonzalez single later in the inning, tying the game at one.
Canaries starter Shawn Blackwell (5-3, 6.07 ERA) hit a rough patch in the fourth. Jacob Rogers reached on a two-out walk. Grider then plastered the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field wall to put the Goldeyes up 3-1. But Blackwell settled in and threw 1-2-3 innings in both the fifth and sixth innings to give himself a shot at his fifth win of the season.
Jake Taylor gave his starter a boost with one swing of the bat. With two on and one away, Taylor hit a towering shot over the wall in left-center to give the Birds the lead back at 4-3. The Canaries would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth courtesy of a Michael Pair RBI single, extending the lead to 5-3.
Jimmer Kennedy and Billy Waltrip came out of the Birds’ bullpen to pitch near flawless seventh and eighth innings, respectively, and Madison Boer picked up his fourth save of the season.
The Birds will host their first Fourth of July game in nearly a decade as they welcome the Kansas City T-Bones to The Birdcage for the first time this season to kick off their week-long homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Monday night. Lefty Misael Siverio (3-4, 6.26 ERA) will take the mound for the Canaries on Monday night in his ninth start of the season.
