The Canaries Re-Sign Aaron Gretz, Add Versitile Rookie Michael Hart
SIOUX FALLS, SD -
The Sioux Falls Canaries lineup just got a dose of athleticism. The Birds have re-signed catcher Aaron Gretz and signed super-utility man Mike Hart, the team announced on Wednesday morning.
Gretz came to Sioux Falls in 2017, following a productive 2016 season with the St. Paul Saints. The Ohio State University graduate hit .244/.346/.353 in 65 games for the Canaries last year, hitting 3 home runs and 11 doubles with 22 RBIs.
"One thing that Aaron does well for us is his quality of at-bats," Birds manager Mike Meyer said. "He can grind out at-bats just about as well as anybody."
Gretz split time at catcher with Mike Falsetti last season. This time around, Meyer has Gretz pegged as the Birds' everyday backstop.
"I thought his handling of our pitching staff toward the end of the year was really solid," Meyer said. "We're expecting him to improve."
Meyer was also excited about Hart, a 23-year-old.
"Everything I've heard about Mike has been really good stuff," Meyer said. "They all say he's extremely dynamic as an athlete."
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Hart served as co-captain for the Minutemen in 2017. He took the field last winter for the Perth Heat of the Australian Baseball League, hitting .222/.378/.306 in 11 games.
Hart was versatile in the field for the Heat, starting at catcher, left field and first base during his stint with the team. Meyer said the Canaries plan to use Hart in various roles as the season goes along.
The Canaries open the 2018 season on Friday, May 18 with a Fireworks Night game against the Chicago Dogs.
