Two Birds Homer In Preseason Loss To Sioux City
The second spring training game of the year was a rough one for the Canaries. The Birds lost to the Sioux City Explorers 11-3 in Vermillion, S.D.
The Explorers' offense started hot and stayed that way, scoring in each of the first six innings of play. Michael Lang had the Xs only home run, a solo shot in the fifth inning.
A two-run home run from Burt Reynolds put the Canaries on the board in the bottom of the third inning. The home run, off Sioux City starter Luis Mateo, was the Birds' second of the spring.
The Canaries would go yard again in the eighth, when Mike Hart hit a solo shot in the eighth inning. It capped off a strong night for Hart, who finished a double short of the cycle.
Dylan Thompson got the start for the Birds, throwing the first three innings. He gave up seven runs (only three of which were earned) on eight hits, walking one batter and striking out none.
Kyle Schepel had a strong outing for the Birds out of the bullpen in the sixth. After giving up a leadoff walk, he struck out the next three Explorers batters to end the frame.
The Canaries are back in action on Sunday, when they renew their rivalry with the Explorers for another exhibition matchup in Huron, S.D. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
