Veteran Pitchers Provide Depth And Experience To Young Birds In 2015

Sioux Falls, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries are pleased to announce the addition of Veteran RHP's Chase Johnson, Tyler Pearson, and Shawn Blackwell for the 2015 season. 

Chase Johnson begins his first season with the Canaries in 2015, but is no stranger to the American Association.  The Scottsdale, Arizona native made just three appearances appearances for the Winnipeg Goldeyes in 2014 before catching on with the Fort Worth Cats of the United League, where he went 3-3 with a 0.59 ERA in 26 appearances.  He found himself back in the American Association in late August, and continued his dominance, posting a 0.69 ERA in 13 appearances for the eventual league champion, Wichita Wingnuts. 

The right-hander made his debut in the American Association with the Amarillo Sox in 2012, going 5-5 with a 3.66 ERA and 11 saves. He racked up 13 saves and 28 strikeouts to go along with his 3.64 ERA in 34 appearances for Fargo and Grand Prairie in 2013. 

Johnson began his professional career in 2009 after being selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 21st round of the MLB Draft, and spent three seasons in the Phillies organization before signing with Amarillo in 2012. In his six professional seasons, Johnson holds a career record of 15-18 and 3.35 ERA to go along with 50 saves in 194 career games played. 

Tyler Pearson enters his first season in a Canaries uniform after spending the last two years with the Laredo Lemurs.  The right-hander was an All-Star for the Lemurs in 2014, posting a 7-8 record and 4.28 ERA.  He made 14 starts in 29 total appearances last season, striking out 97 batters in 101 innings pitched. 

This will be the 9th professional season for the 30-year-old Pearson, who enters the 2015 season with a 32-27 record and 5.42 ERA.  The right-hander enters the year with 394 career strikeouts. 

Shawn Blackwell spent the last two seasons playing Independent baseball with the Washington WildThings in the Frontier League.  He was an All-Star for the WildThings in 2014, finishing the year with a 10-4 record an 3.70 ERA.  The rght-hander made 17 starts in 21 appearances last season for the WildThings, striking out 75 batters in 99 2/3 innings pitched. 

Blackwell was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 24th round of the 2009 MLB Draft, and spent three seasons in the Rangers minor league system before entering the Independant ranks in 2013. Now in his 6th professional season, the right-hander holds a career record of 26-19 and 4.22 ERA in 362 2/3 innings pitched.
