Veteran Reliever Returns For Second Season In Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Thursday afternoon that veteran RHP Chase Johnson will return for his second season with the organization.
The Canaries closer recorded 15 saves in 40 relief appearances while going 5-2 with a 2.55 ERA. He allowed 16 runs (12 earned) on 36 hits and struck out 37 batters over 42.1 innings.
“We are extremely excited to have Chase back in a Canaries uniform,” said field manager Chris Paterson. “He put up some really good numbers for us last season, and proved to be a guy we could rely in late-game situations.”
The Scottsdale, AZ native made his American Association debut with the Amarillo Sox in 2012, going 5-5 with a 3.66 ERA. The right-hander recorded 49 saves while appearing in 129 American Association games over the last four seasons with Fargo, Grand Prairie, Winnipeg, Wichita, and Sioux Falls. He enters the 2016 season with a 20-20 overall record and 3.23 ERA to go along with his 289 career strikeouts and 65 saves.
Johnson began his professional career in 2009 after being selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 21st round of the MLB Draft. He spent three seasons in the Phillies organization, posting a 5-9 record and 3.89 ERA.
“Chase is going to be our leader in the bullpen,” add Paterson. “We think his work ethic and experience in this league will help make us one of the top pitching staff’s in the American Association this season.”
The Sioux Falls Canaries enter their 24th season on May 19th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park.
