Wingnuts Snap Canaries Win Steak In Slugfest

WICHITA, KS – The Wichita Wingnuts scored six runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries by the final score of 13-10 on Friday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
The Birds got the offense going early, with Jabari Henry blasting a one-out, solo homer (13) over the left field wall in the first inning.
Dan Motl extended the Sioux Falls lead to 3-0 in the top of the 2nd inning after ripping a two-out, two-run triple (5) into the gap in left-field.
The Wingnuts got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the 3rd inning, scoring two runs after a pair of Canaries throwing errors to make it a 3-2 ball game. Wichita took their first lead in the bottom of the 4th inning with two more unearned runs scoring after the third Canaries throwing error of the night.
The Canaries answered right back in the top of the 4th with Blake Schmit leading off the inning with a walk and later scoring from third base on a Dan Motl fielder’s choice to tie the game at 4-4.
Harrison Kain gave the Wingnuts their second lead of the night in the bottom of the 4th inning with a two-out RBI single, driving in Brennan Selgado to make it 5-4.
The Birds struck big in the top of the 5th inning, scoring 4 runs in a 9 at-bat inning. Blake Schmit drove in two runs with an RBI double while Trey Vavra and Mike Falsetti each picked up an RBI with a pair of sacrifice fly outs.
Wichita scored single runs in the 5th and 6th innings, but still trailed by a run going into the 8th inning. Henry extend the Canaries lead to 9-7 with a a lead-off homer, his second of the night. The Birds added another insurance run with Ty Morrison scoring on a Schmit fielder’s choice to give Sioux Falls a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the 8th inning.
Dylan Thompson came out for his second inning in relief after holding the Wingnuts scoreless in the bottom of the 7th inning. The right-hander ran out of gas though, giving up 5 runs on 4 hits before turning the ball over to Andrew Woeck who gave up a run on 1 hit before wrapping up the inning. Wichita scored 6 runs in the 9 at-bat inning in the bottom of the 8th inning to spoil what was a well fought game for the Birds
Wood took the no decision after giving up 7 runs (3 earned runs) on 10 hits. The right-hander did not walk a batter while striking out seven Wichita batters on Friday night. Thompson suffered his second loss of the season after allowing 5 runs on 5 hits over 1 inning in relief.
Henry once again led the offensive attack, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Henry has three home runs over his last two ball games, and is now second on the team with 14 round trippers this season. Chris Jacobs had another good night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Schmit went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored in the loss.
The Canaries continue their three-game series in Wichita, KS on Saturday night with RHP Troy Marks (3-4, 4.31 ERA) making his 11th start of the season against Wingnuts’ RHP Alex Boshers (7-2, 4.01 ERA).
