X's Sweep Canaries After 7-1 Final on Sunday night
SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux City Explorers wrapped up a series sweep of the Sioux Falls Canaries on Sunday night, defeating the Birds by the final score of 7-1 at Mercy Field and Lewis & Clark Park.
Canaries starting pitcher Troy Marks was roughed up in his second start of the season, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits over three innings of work. The right-hander retired Tony Campana for the first out in the bottom of the first inning before walking Michael Lang. Lang scored a batter later when Jayce Ray sent a home run over the right-field wall. Nate Samson followed that up with a single and later scored on a LeVon Washington base hit to give the X’s a 3-0 lead.
Sioux City added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning, and one more in the bottom of the third before Mark exited the ball game trailing 7-0.
The Canaries bullpen worked the final five innings, with five different pitchers each working a shutout inning in relief.
Sioux City’s starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson picked up his second win of the season after holding the Canaries to one run on six hits over six strong innings. The left-hander retired the first six batters faced before giving up a lead-off walk to Aaron Gretz in the top of the third inning.
The Canaries didn’t collect their first hit of the night until Ty Morrison roped a one-out double into the right-field gap in the top of the fourth inning. Morrison scored the Birds’ lone run of the night later on in the inning when Chris Jacobs drove him home on a RBI single to right.
Jacobs nearly hit one out of the park in the top of the sixth inning, but bounced it off the top of the wall in left-center. It was a double for Jacobs, but the power hitter was denied an RBI after Burt Reynolds was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning. BJ Guinn followed that off with a single before Patrick Fiala flew out to left, ending the inning.
Jacobs finished the night going 2-for-4 with an RBI. The power hitting infielder finished the series going 4-for-11 with two doubles, a home run, and three RBI. The Winston-Salem, NC native has hit safely in eight straight games and has pieced together six multi-hit games during the same stretch.
Washington led the Sioux City offensive attack, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
