SIOUX FALLS -- The Sioux Falls Pheasants made Trevor Lawhorn’s record-breaking night extra special with a 7-6, walkoff victory over the St. Paul Saints on Saturday night before 2,502 fans.

Lawhorn played his 321st game in a Sioux Falls uniform, surpassing Felix Pagan for the most games played.

In the bottom of the ninth, Al Quintana singled home Jake Taylor for the game-winning run on a hard hit bouncer off the glove of Saints shortstop Tanner Townsend. The ninth-inning rally began with an 11-pitch walk to Cristian Guerrero.

“I was thinking that I have to get my pitch,” said Guerrero. “I fouled off a couple pitches trying to find my pitch to hit and had to take my base.”

Guerrero later was out trying to advance to third base, but Taylor scored from second base on Quintana’s single. Quintana went 2-for-4 with two RBI singles on the night.

The Pheasants took leads in the first, second, third and fifth innings, only to see the Saints tie it up in each next half-inning, adding extra drama for Lawhorn’s milestone.

“He comes to every work everyday ready to play, gets his work in,” Meyer said of Lawhorn, who is in his fifth season. “He’s a good guy around the clubhouse. Everybody seems to like him.”

Lawhorn was 1-for-4 and hit by a pitch. All but one Pheasants batter notched a hit on Saturday. Guerrero went 3-for-4 and belted his league-leading ninth home run of the year in the fifth inning. Jared Bolden also homered to lead off the third inning, his fifth of the season.

Rod Scurry made his first professional start for the Pheasants and took a no-decision. He pitched five innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits.

“For his first start Scurry did a heck of a job throwing strikes,” said Pheasants pitching coach Mike Meyer. “He had a couple of innings where he was all over the place and that cost him, but other than that he stayed calm and under control, making pitches when we needed them.”

Cody Evans (1-0) earned the win for the Pheasants. He faced only Willie Cabrera  and struck him out to end the top of the ninth.

Four Pheasants pitchers came out of the bullpen, allowing only two runs on five hits in the final four innings. Thomas Heithoff, Jack Van Leur and Evans combined to shut out the Saints in the final three innings.

Reid Mahon (2-3) took the loss for the Saints. He pitched all of the ninth inning allowing one run on one hit and walked one batter.

The finale of the three-game series against St. Paul is at 2:05 p.m. on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17, at Sioux Falls Stadium.
