Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries split the doubleheader against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, falling in game one 3-2 and taking game two, 6-5, Tuesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Brett Marr tripled to lead off the bottom of the first inning in game one against the RedHawks and scored on Burt Reynolds’ RBI groundout to give the Canaries an early 1-0 lead against Jose Almarante and the RedHawks.
The Canaries added another run in the third on Chris Jacobs’ RBI double, scoring Reynolds from third, to take a 2-0 lead, but Fargo shut out the Canaries the rest of the way at the plate.
Alamarante stranded two in the third and didn’t allow a batter to reach after, retiring the next six in order heading into the seventh.
Fargo-Moorhead cut the Canaries’ lead in half against Nordgren in the fifth, as K.D. Kong led off the frame with a double and came around to score on Devan Ahart’s RBI single.
Nordgren allowed six hits, including five doubles, but left the game in-line for the win, allowing just one run on six hits and two walks over 5.0 innings pitched.
Dylan Thompson relieved Nordgren and worked a scoreless sixth before Jose Ortega came on for the save in the top of the seventh.
Ortega struck out the first batter he faced but allowed back-to-back singles to put the go-ahead run on. Ortega picked up another strikeout to put two outs on the board, but Chris Grayson singled both runs home to give the RedHawks the lead.
And Casey Weathers shut the Canaries down in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the save and give the RedHawks a win in game one of the doubleheader.
Ortega took the loss for Sioux Falls in game one, while Alamarante picked up the win.
In game two, the Canaries once again took the early lead, loading the bases and scoring two runs on two walks and three hit batters by Benji Waite in the bottom of the first.
But the RedHawks once again battled back, scoring unearned runs in the top of the second and third innings against Bryce Morrow to tie the game at two.
The Canaries retook the lead on Chris Jacobs’ RBI single and Blake Schmit’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning, but Fargo came right back to take the lead in the top of the fourth.
The RedHawks scored three runs on four hits, capped off by Devan Ahart’s solo home run, to take a 6-5 lead.
Once again though, the lead wouldn’t last long, with the Canaries scoring two in the bottom of the frame to once again take the lead.
Mike Falsetti and Dan Motl led off the inning with back-to-back singles, moved to second and third, respectively, on Marr’s sacrifice bunt and scored on an errant throw on Reynolds’ ground ball to give the Canaries a 6-5 lead.
Neither team scored in the fifth or sixth before Ortega once again came out in the seventh, but this time nailed down the save to give the Canaries a 6-5 victory.
Morrow picks up the win for the Canaries, who move to 41-46 after the doubleheader, while Waite takes the loss for the RedHawks, who move to 47-39.
