Gary, IN – The Sioux Falls Canaries fell in walk-off fashion to the Gary SouthShore RailCats, 2-1, at the U.S. Steel Yard Tuesday night.

On the hill for Sioux Falls, Troy Marks worked around five hits and a bases-loaded jam over the first two innings to keep the RailCats off the board. After loading the bases in the bottom of the second, Marks retired the next 10 straight, to keep the game at a scoreless tie.

RailCats starter Alex Gunn matched Marks over the first six innings, allowing just four hits and five total Canary base runners.

In the bottom of the sixth, though, Marks ran into some trouble and allowed the first run of the game on Colin Willis’ sacrifice fly, scoring Cameron Newell from third to give Gary a 1-0 lead.

Marks allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out three batters over 6.0 innings of work, putting together his second consecutive quality start, but left the game after the sixth inning in line for the loss with the RailCats holding a 1-0 lead.

But the Birds came back in the top of the seventh and executed a double-steal to perfection with Patrick Fiala on first and Tyler Wolfe at third to even up the score at one and give Marks a no-decision.

James Jones relieved Marks in the seventh and worked a scoreless frame, but ran into some trouble when he came back out for the eighth.

An error and single put runners on first and second before a sacrifice bunt moved the runners over to second and third. Jones intentionally walked Willis to load the bases but got the pinch-hitting Frank Martinez to pop-out and Ryan Fitzgerald to ground out to get out of the jam unscathed.

The Birds couldn’t get anything going at the plate in the eighth or ninth though and a leadoff walk yielded by Andrew Woeck came back to haunt the Birds as the RailCats walked-off on Alex Crosby’s RBI single to top the Birds, 2-1.

Woeck takes the loss for the Canaries, who fall to 37-43 on the season, while Jorge De Leon picks up the win for the RailCats, who move to 45-35 on the year.
