Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries smashed the Gary SouthShore RailCats with eight runs on 13 hits to take an 8-1 victory Tuesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The Canaries got right to RailCats’ starter Jeff Matthys in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on back-to-back-to-back singles from Burt Reynolds, Blake Schmit and Jabari Henry.

And it wouldn’t take long for the Canaries to tack on more. The Birds added three runs on three hits off Matthys in the bottom of the second, knocking Gary’s starter out after just 1.1 innings pitched.

Tyler Wolfe led off the bottom of the second with a triple and after Aaron Gretz walked, Dan Motl brought Wolfe home with a RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0. One batter later, Reynolds singled Gretz and Motl home to make it a 4-0 lead.

Ayrton Costa relieved Matthys in the bottom of the second, but he didn’t fare much better against the Birds.

Sioux Falls added two more against Costa in the fourth on Schmit’s RBI single and Henry’s sacrifice fly and two more in the bottom of the sixth on Henry’s two-run homer to extend their lead to 8-1.

Henry’s homer, his 24th of the season, placed him in a tie with Kansas City’s Kevin Keyes atop the American Association home run leaderboard. Henry finished the day 2-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBI.

The Birds also got big contributions from the bottom of their order in Gretz and Motl. Gretz went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks and two runs scored, while Motl went 2-for-3 with two singles, two stolen bases, a walk and two runs scored.

Five Canaries: Motl, Gretz, Henry, Schmit and Reynolds, tallied multiple hits against the RailCats while all but one batter recorded a hit for Sioux Falls.

On the hill for Sioux Falls, Bo Hellquist allowed just one run on three hits over his 6.0 innings of work, walking four and striking out three.

Nicco Blank relieved Hellquist in the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning and Andrew Woeck followed with two shutout innings of his own to give the Canaries an 8-1 victory and assure the Canaries of at least a series split with Gary SouthShore.

Hellquist picks up the win for the Birds, who move to 43-51 on the season, while Matthys takes the loss for the RailCats, who fall to 52-42 on the year.

The Sioux Falls Canaries continue their four-game set against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Grady Wood (8-3, 2.60 ERA) will take the hill for the Canaries facing RailCats’ LHP Jeff McKenzie (4-4, 4.26 ERA).
