Sioux Falls, SD – Grady Wood didn’t allow a baserunner to reach after the third inning, and the Sioux Falls Canaries topped the Salina Stockade, 2-1, Saturday night at Sioux Falls Stadium in front of 3,087.
Wood pitched his second-straight complete game for the Canaries, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out 10 batters.
The Stockade scored their lone run of the game against Wood in the top of the second. Jesse Baker led off the frame with a double and came around to score on Fernando Garza’s single, but Wood got Logan Trowbridge to ground into a double play to get out of a jam.
And after walking Jimmy Heck to leadoff the third, Wood didn’t allow a base runner the rest of the game, retiring the next 20 batters.
Brian Smith also put together a complete game for the Stockade and allowed just one hit over the first five frames.
Chris Jacobs though, ended Smith’s scoreless stretch, leading off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to tie the game at one. Patrick Fiala followed with a double but was left stranded at second base.
After a scoreless sixth, Jabari Henry led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple, his first of the season, putting the go-ahead run at third base. Two batters later, Henry came home on a wild pitch to give the Birds the lead for good.
Wood picks up the win for the Canaries, who move to 39-45 on the season. Smith takes the loss for Salina, who drop to 16-68 on the year.
The Canaries wrap up their three-game set against the Salina Stockade Sunday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium, sending RHP Troy Marks (3-7, 5.20 ERA) to the mound facing Stockade RHP Josh Hodges (3-4, 5.06 ERA).
