Sioux City, IA – The Sioux Falls Canaries fell to the Sioux City Explorers, 4-2, in the final game of the 2017 American Association regular season at Mercy Field at Lewis & Clark Park.
Chris Jacobs’ gave the Canaries an early lead for the second-straight game against Sioux City, launching a solo home run over the right field wall in the top of the second of Hobbs Johnson.
The Explorers tied things up in the bottom of the third inning against Jose Ortega, with Michael scoring on Dylan Kelly’s sacrifice fly, but the Birds came back to retake the lead in the top of the fourth.
Burt Reynolds led off the frame with a single and stole second before coming home on Jacobs’ RBI double to give Sioux Falls a 2-1 lead. A batter later, Trey Vavra walked to load the bases, but Sioux Falls left the bases loaded and headed to the bottom of the fourth with a one-run lead.
Tyler Wolfe relieved Ortega in and worked a scoreless fourth, but Andrew Woeck walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, and Lang again came home on a sacrifice fly, this time off the bat of Eudor Garcia, to tie the game at two.
Ortega allowed one run on four hits, walked two and struck out one over 3.0 innings pitched. Wolfe struck out two and walked one in his inning of relief, while Woeck allowed one run on one hit, walked two and struck out one in his inning of relief.
Dylan Thompson relieved Woeck and worked 1-2-3 innings in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, but ran into some trouble in the eighth.
Back-to-back hits, a single and a double, to lead off the bottom of the eighth for Sioux City put Thompson in a jam, and Daniel Jackson’s fielder’s choice gave the Explorers’ a 3-2 lead.
James Jones relieved Thompson with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but Joel Davis’ sacrifice fly extended Sioux City’s lead to 4-2 before Jones could get out of the inning.
At the plate, Ryan Flores and Chris Powell kept the Canaries off the scoreboard through the eighth, and P.J. Francescon nailed down a 1-2-3 save in the top of the ninth to give Sioux City a 4-2 victory.
Thompson takes the loss for the Canaries, who finished the 2017 American Association season 45-55, while Powell picks up the win for the Explorers, who wrap up the season 46-54.
