St. Paul, MN – The Sioux Falls Canaries topped the St. Paul Saints, 7-3, Saturday night at CHS Field to pick up a season series win against their North Division foe.
For the first time in three games, St. Paul scored first against Bo Hellquist and the Canaries, taking an early 1-0 lead on Anthony Gallas’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.
But the Birds came right back to tie things up and take the lead in the top of the second inning. Jabari Henry led off the inning with a walk, stole second and moved to third on Chris Jacobs’ bloop single.
Tyler Wolfe followed Jacobs’ with another single, picking up a RBI and putting the first run on the board for the Birds before Aaron Gretz gave the Canaries the lead with a sacrifice fly.
Blake Schmit continued the crooked inning with a RBI single, scoring Wolfe from second and Sioux Falls headed to the bottom of the second with a 3-2 lead.
Kes Carter led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and came around to score, but Hellquist struck out JJ Gould looking to end the St. Paul threat, strand two base runners with the Canaries leading 3-2.
The Birds got the run back in the top of the third on Jacobs’ RBI single, scoring Burt Reynolds from second base, but the Saints cut the Canaries lead in half in the bottom of the frame on Anthony Gallas’ solo home run.
Both teams settled down at the plate over the fourth and fifth innings before Patrick Fiala extended the Canaries’ lead to 5-3 with a solo home run to lead off the top of the sixth.
On the mound for the Birds, Hellquist allowed a run over each of the first three innings, but settled down after that, shutting out the Saints over fourth through seventh innings.
Hellquist allowed just three runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out three and walking two over 7.0 innings of work in his first start since being inserted into the rotation.
James Jones relieved Hellquist in the bottom of the eighth but not before the Canaries added another insurance run off the bat of Ty Morrison, who scored Gretz from third on a ground-rule double.
Jones worked a scoreless eighth against St. Paul before the Birds delivered another insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Henry led off the top of the ninth and launched an absolute moonshot off Connor Little to extend the Birds’ lead to 7-3. Henry’s home run, his 19th of the season, moved him into a tie with St. Paul’s Gallas on the American Association home run leaderboard.
And though it wasn’t a save situation, thanks to Henry, Jose Ortega worked a scoreless ninth to give the Birds the victory.
Hellquist picks up the win for the Canaries, who move to 36-42 on the season and ensure themselves of at least a series split against the Saints.
Jason Hoppe takes the loss for the St. Paul, who fall to 42-36 on the year.
