Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries couldn’t overcome the Texas AirHogs’ early offense and fell, 6-3, to the AirHogs on Saturday night in front of 2,861 at Sioux Falls Stadium.

For the second-straight game, the AirHogs dinked and dunked their way to double-digit hits and took the early lead in the first inning against the Canaries.

The AirHogs strung together three singles in the top of the first against Miles Nordgren, taking a 1-0 lead on Jake Taylor’s bloop single with two outs in the inning.

But the Canaries put a run on the board in the bottom of the frame to tie things at one. Back-to-back singles from Jabari Henry and Ty Morrison put runners are first and second before Chris Jacobs’ knocked in Henry with a single of his own.

Texas retook the lead in the top of the second on back-to-back doubles from Beamer Weems and Charley Thurber, but the Canaries came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie things up and take the lead.

Michael Freeman walked Tyler Wolfe and Mike Falsetti to lead off the inning, and the two Canaries’ base runners advanced on Blake Schmit’s sacrifice bunt. Dan Motl’s sacrifice fly tied the game at two before Falsetti scored and Henry reached on an error, giving Sioux Falls a 3-2 lead.

The AirHogs though, got right back at Nordgren in the top of the third, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring four runs on four hits and a walk to take a 6-3 lead.

Nordgren settled down after allowing six runs over the first three innings, putting zeros on the scoreboard in each of the next four innings.

However, the Canaries couldn’t answer the AirHogs’ four runs in the top of third, and Freeman kept the Birds scoreless over his next 4.0 innings pitched as well.

Nordgren allowed six runs on 14 hits against Texas, striking out three and walking two over 7.0 innings of work. On the other side, Freeman allowed just three runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out four and walking two against the Birds.

Nicco Blank and Dylan Thompson came out of the Canaries bullpen to continue the scoreless stretch, but the Birds couldn’t get anything going at the plate after the second, with just five batters reaching base over the final seven frames, falling to Texas, 6-3.

In total, AirHogs scored six runs on 17 hits against the Birds, and 16 runs on 35 hits over the past two games.

Nordgren takes the loss for the Canaries, who fall to 32-39 on the season. Freeman picks up the win and Robert Tasin earns the save for the AirHogs, who move to 28-43 on the season.
