Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries twice battle back from three and four run deficits, but fell just short against the Wichita Wingnuts by a score of 11-8; in front a crowd of 3,728, the largest of the season at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Bryce Morrow struggled out of the gate against the Wingnuts in the top of the first inning, as the Birds’ pitching’s first inning struggles continued.
Brent Clevlen’s sacrifice fly gave Wichita a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Matt Chavez launched a two-run homer, extending the Wingnuts lead to 3-0.
But just like Friday night, the Birds would rally. In the bottom of the first inning, Burt Reynolds doubled with two on to score a run, cutting the deficit to two.
Wichita added one to their lead in the top of the second, but the Birds came back to tie things up and take the lead in the bottom of the inning.
An error, walk and a single loaded the bases in the bottom of the second for Dan Motl, who cleared them with a three-run triple, tying the game at four. And just one batter later, Jabari Henry knocked in Motl on a sacrifice fly, giving the Birds’ their first lead of the game.
The Birds; lead would be short-lived though. In the top of the fourth, the Wingnuts roughed up Morrow for five runs on six hits, ending Morrow’s day after just 3.2 innings pitched.
Both teams’ bats went silent over the next four frames before the Canaries began to rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Henry’s two-out solo home run in the seventh cut the deficit to three, and after Ty Morrison reached on an error, Chris Jacobs’ RBI double brought him home to cut Wichita’s lead to 9-7.
Bo Hellquist relieved Morrow in the fourth and worked 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, and James Jones followed with a scoreless inning of his own in the eighth.
Jones came out for the top of the ninth, getting the first two outs after giving up a leadoff single, but he left one up to Clevlen who extended the Wingnuts’ lead to 11-7.
In the bottom of the ninth, Sioux Falls threatened, scored a run and brought the tying run to the plate, but Seth Harvey struck out the side, handing the Birds’ their third-straight loss.
Morrow takes the loss for the Birds, who fall to 20-27 on the season. Alex Boshers picks up the win for the Wingnuts, who move to 35-13 on the year.
