Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries topped the Winnipeg Goldeyes, 3-2, to even up the three-game series at one-game apiece in front of 2,015 Tuesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
RHP Grady Wood and LHP Zach Dodson both allowed a run in the first inning, before locking it down in a pitchers’ duel over the next five frames.
Josh Romanski's two-out double and Reggie Abercrombie’s RBI single put the Goldeyes on the board in the top of the first, before the Birds tied things up on Chris Jacobs’ RBI double in the bottom of the frame, scoring Blake Schmit from second.
Both starters settled down after the first, Dodson allowing just three base runners over the next four innings and Wood allowing just four heading into the sixth.
Wood worked just his second 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth before the Birds’ broke the tie with Dodson stepping back on the hill for the bottom of the inning.
Back-to-back singles from Jacobs and Jabari Henry put runners at the corners for Trey Wolfe. Wolfe grounded into a fielder’s choice to keep runners at the corners before Patrick Fiala and Trey Vavra brought two runs home with back-to-back singles of their own.
Wood came out for the seventh and worked around a two-out single, picking up his second strikeout, a season-low for Wood, to end the threat. Wood allowed just one run on six hits, struck out two and walked one over seven innings of work.
Dylan Thompson relieved Wood in the eighth and allowed David Rohm to come around to score after a leadoff single, but kept the Birds’ with a one-run lead.
And Jose Ortega nailed down the save in the ninth, his 15th of the season, working around two Goldeye base runners.
Wood picks up the win for the Canaries, who move to 34-40 on the season. Dodson takes the loss for the Goldeyes, who fall to 44-31 on the year.
