Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Sioux Falls Canaries tied the game in the top of the eighth, but gave the lead right back in the bottom of the frame and fell to the Winnipeg Goldeyes, 5-2, Friday night at Shaw Park.
The Goldeyes struck first in the Battle of the Aces against Canaries’ RHP Grady Wood, scoring two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third.
Andrew Sohn led off the bottom of the third with a single and moved to second on Casey Turgeon’s walk. Josh Romanski's RBI single brought Sohn home and Reggie Abercrombie followed with a sacrifice fly to give Winnipeg a 2-0 lead.
Wood, though, retired the 13 of the next 15 including an eight pitch, 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth inning to keep the Goldeyes lead at just 2-0 heading into the eighth.
Charle Rosario, though, outdueled Wood, allowing just two hits and four total base runners over his first seven innings of work. After walking Brett Marr in the third, Rosario retired the next 13 straight heading to the eighth.
Rosario came out for the top of the eighth with his pitch count rising, but he couldn’t complete the inning and the Canaries finally got on the scoreboard.
Tyler Wolfe led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on an error, coming around to score on Dan Motl’s triple, his league-leading eighth triple of the year. Victor Capellan relieved Rosario with two outs, but his errant throw to first on Marr’s grounder allowed Motl to score to tie the game at two.
But the Goldeyes took the lead right back against Wood in the bottom of the eighth with Casey Turgeon reaching on a walk, moving to second on a passed ball, third on a wild pitch and scoring on Josh Romanski's single.
Dylan Thompson relieved Wood, but the Goldeyes added two more runs to extend their lead to 5-2 heading to the ninth. Wood allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over 7.0 innings pitched, striking out six and walking two.
And in the ninth one man reached for the Birds against Capellan, but the Canaries fell, 5-2, in game one of the three game set.
Wood takes the loss for the Canaries, who fall to 41-49 on the year, while Capellan picks up the win for the Goldeyes, who move to 55-36 on the season.
