Birds Add Big Bats, Sign Reynolds and Grayson
SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Burt Reynolds, the Sioux Falls Canaries' reigning team MVP, has re-signed with the Birds for the 2018 season, the team announced Monday morning.
Reynolds, an outfielder and corner infielder, hit .283/.348/.468 with 24 doubles, 16 home runs and 68 RBI in 2017. He stole 34 bases in 40 attempts.
Reynolds showed his versatility in the field for the Canaries last year, playing all three outfield positions plus first and third base.
"One of the things that we love about Burt is the energy he brings. He plays hard every day and plays the game the right way," Sioux Falls manager Mike Meyer said. "We're really lucky to have him back."
Outfielder Chris Grayson also rejoins the Canaries via a trade with Fargo-Moorhead. Grayson joined the RedHawks midseason last year, hitting .290/.372/.443 with 5 home runs and 41 RBI. He also stole 26 bases in just 57 games with the team.
This is Grayson's second stint with the Birds, having played in Sioux Falls in 2015 and 2016. Grayson, who lives in Sioux Falls in the offseason, says he's excited to rejoin the Canaries' lineup.
"It was fitting for me that the trade happened," Grayson said. "It was something I wanted, to be close to my family during the season and have them experience what I intend to be a really good year."
Sioux Falls sent relief pitcher Andrew Woeck to the RedHawks in exchange for Grayson.
The Canaries open the 2018 season on Friday, May 18th with a Fireworks Night game against the Chicago Dogs.
